Songkran — Thai New Year at Paññāgiri

Join us on Sunday, 12 April 2026, at Paññāgiri to celebrate Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year — one of the most joyful and beloved festivals of Southeast Asia.

What is Songkran?

Songkran marks the passage of the sun into Aries, the astronomical beginning of a new cycle. Celebrated for centuries across Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia, it is a cultural New Year that has long been observed alongside Buddhist practice. At its heart, Songkran is an invitation to let go of the old, purify the heart, and welcome renewal — through water, generosity, and gratitude.

A day of culture, community and practice

At Paññāgiri this year, the day will be a rare opportunity to experience Thai culture and tradition in the heart of the Catalan countryside. There will be authentic Thai food to share, and the ceremonial space will be prepared together as a community.

The water blessing ceremony

In the afternoon, we will gather for the water blessing ceremony — one of the most cherished expressions of Songkran. In Thai tradition, gently pouring water over the hands of elders and monastics is a gesture of deep respect: a way of asking forgiveness, expressing gratitude, and receiving their blessing for the year ahead. The water washes away the past and carries wishes of health, happiness and peace.
